YSS of Hamilton County begins telehealth services

Thanks to a grant from Enhance Hamilton County Foundation and a donation from Adele and Dean Bowden, YSS of Hamilton County began providing telehealth services in August.

YSS of Hamilton County provides holistic and co-occurring behavioral health services for youths and families including screening, assessment, therapy and counseling, according to Director Jane Adams. Sometimes, it becomes apparent through assessment that a youth needs additional support from a psychiatrist, she said, With few psychiatric options in Hamilton County, families are either left without treatment or have to travel for an appointment.

The new service uses state-of-the-art equipment and produces video and audio se clear it seems the doctor is in the same room, Adams said. With a YSS nurse Brittany Hultman on site and the telehealth provider on screen, the service allows for conversations that result in identification of problems, development of tretment plans and the providsion of medication management.

Tilda Newman already came to YSS for therapy, however she would have to drive to Ames for psychiatric appointments.

“It is a relief to have Telehealth services locally because it sames me time and money and eliminates the need to travel two hours,” Newman said. “I think YSS staff are excellent providers and I am thankful they now can meet all of my family’s mental health needs in my own community.”
